Do body wraps work for weight loss?

A body wrap is a procedure that has become popular both in spas and for at-home, do-it-yourself treatments. It usually involves the application of a scrub before being tightly wrapped in a non-breathable fabric, such as linen, bandages, or a thin plastic. The body is then heated through the use of an electric blanket, exercise, or an elevated room temperature. Body wrap enthusiasts claim a range of benefits, including detoxification, instant slimming, and smoother skin. Some body wrap sites and spas advertise that a body wrap will take several inches off of your arms, waist, and thighs.

Body Wraps for Weight Loss

Can a body wrap really help with weight loss? My answer is no. Body wraps will have no effect on body fat removal or composition. If you search for the scientific backing for such a claim, you will come up empty. While body wraps may cause a negligible amount of weight loss, that loss will be due to water weight lost through sweat, which will immediately be regained upon rehydrating. In addition, the use of body wraps can cause severe dehydration.  This dehydration can lead to hypovolemic shock if not monitored carefully. Body wraps are also ineffective for cellulite reduction.  Since a body wrap will moisturize the skin, it may temporarily make the appearance of cellulite less noticeable.

Body Wraps for Detoxifcation

Will body wraps assist with detoxification? Unfortunately, there is no evidence for this claim either. Detoxification of the body is primarily a function of the kidneys and the liver. Sweat, on the other hand, simply cools down the skin. Sweating will not remove toxins from the body. In fact, excessive sweating can strain the kidneys and liver, making them less effective at removing toxins.

The Bottom Line

Body wraps can be a relaxing way to temporarily moisturize the skin. Regardless of what sort of scrub is applied to your skin before wrapping, body wraps will not remove toxins from the body, assist with weight loss, or reduce cellulite. However, if you like the moisturizing effects of a body wrap, you may safely enjoy one as long as the wrappings are not too tight and if you hydrate properly throughout the treatment.
